Sometimes referred to as endodontic therapy, root canal treatment is provided when the interior of a tooth has experienced damage due to infection or decay. This treatment consists of taking out the harmful living material that is present inside the tooth and replacing it with medicated fillings. This will restore the function and appearance of the tooth, while also allowing it to retain much of its original structure.
A root canal infection occurs when decay reaches a tooth’s inner pulp or when a bacterial infection develops inside a tooth or at its root tip. There are several characteristics of a root canal infection, including:
- Intense toothache
- Temperature sensitivities
- Inflamed and tender gums
- Abscess on the gums
Root canal treatment starts by placing a rubber sheet around the damaged tooth. This is done to prevent the infection from spreading during the procedure, and it will also ensure that the tooth remains dry while work is being completed. Next, specialized dental tools are used to access the inside of the tooth so that any infected pulp, damaged nerve tissue, and visible decay can be removed. After cleaning out all of the harmful materials inside the tooth, our experts will seal the structure with a medicated filling substance. Finally, the tooth will be covered with a dental crown. This will ensure its stability and prevent any fractures from occurring later.
